This Week's Focus... Analysis Prompt

We will be writing the following essay in class on Monday:

In his second volume of memoirs, Ways of Escape (1980), Graham Green observed the following:"Writing is a form of therapy; sometimes I wonder how all those who do not write, compose or paint can manage to escape the madness, melancholia, the panic fear which is inherent in the human situation.”

How can writers use memoirs as therapy to deal with the human situation and to reflect on larger issues/ideas? In addition to your own independent reading, use specific evidence from at least two different memoirs read in class.

Socratic Circles

The above prompt is the focus of today's Socratic circle! Use the ideas you gathered from the texts in the graphic organizer AND think about your own experience as a writer. Explore the emotions that came out in the texts we read. Think about how this helped the authors deal with emotions and issues.
